Gemstones Have Numerous Uses

There are several different types of precious and semi precious gemstone and almost everybody likes the way they look. Most gemstones are made out of minerals and are mined from the ground. However, some rocks such as Lapis Lazuli are commonly considered to be gems though in fact they are not made of minerals. Today we have the technology to cut and facet gems in a way that makes them look particularly beautiful. However gemstones have been used for a variety of purposes since ancient times.

Practical Uses

The ancient Chinese were the first people to use gems to cut other materials and this is something we still do today. Diamonds are the hardest mineral known to man and they are used to cut and polish gems and other tough materials such as concrete, wood, pick and stone. Gemstones have been used in the past for other practical purposes too. For instance the Egyptians used carved gemstones as seals.

Collectables

Some people do not use gemstones for any practical or aesthetic purpose. Many individuals simply collect different precious and semi-precious gems. Gem collectors are particularly keen to get their hands on rare gems or those that are not commonly used. Some people collect gems simply because they love them and find the practice fun while others do so for investment purposes.

For Healing

Some people use gemstones for the purpose of Reiki healing. New age healers believe that each gem has its own metaphysical properties and can be used to unblock energy vortexes called chakras to restore the physical, psychological and spiritual health of an individual. The nature of a person’s problem determines which gemstone they require to heal them. For instance emeralds are often used to heal cardiovascular ailments while amethysts are purported to eliminate anxiety and stress.

Gemstones are also used quite frequently in meditation. The idea is to relax and become one with a particular gem so that you understand and adopt its physical properties. Some people place a gem on a particular part of the body while meditating in order to relax. Others put the gem at eye level and focus on it to the exclusion of everything else.

Aesthetic Purposes

Gemstones are most commonly used in jewelry and other decorative items. For instance many people own a gemstone ring, necklace, pacelet or pair of earrings. Jewelry that contains precious gems tends to cost more, especially if the gem has a large carat weight. Jewelry that is made with semi-precious gemstones is more affordable. Some people actually prefer jewelry made with semi-precious gems because they find them more attractive than those that are rarer and more valuable.
