How To Choose A Gemstone Necklace

Women have been wearing gemstone necklaces for thousands of years, but 21st century females are particularly lucky. We live in an age in which the technology exists to cut and facet a gemstone in a way that makes it look truly beautiful. Our ancestors did not have that luxury. Still recent generations of women were not the first to wear gemstone necklaces to accentuate an outfit or enhance personal beauty. The difference is that now most women can afford to own at least one gemstone necklace whereas in the past only those who came from a wealthy background were able to own such fine jewelry.

The Cost

Obviously you should only purchase a gemstone necklace if you can comfortably afford to do so. Fortunately some gemstone necklaces are very reasonably priced. For instance, if a necklace contains less rare semi precious gems such as amethyst, black onyx, jade or rose quartz it will be far more affordable than one that has rubies, emeralds or fancy colored diamonds. You can also compromise on the price of a gemstone necklace by choosing gems of a lesser carat weight or a less expensive metal setting such as silver or titanium. You may also wish to consider purchasing a necklace that contains synthetically made gemstones if you wish to save some cash. Conversely if you insist on a gemstone necklace that is made out of thick platinum and large natural fancy pink diamonds you should expect to pay a great deal of money for it.

Common Sense

When choosing a gemstone necklace you will want to use a measure of common sense. Consider what kind of jewelry suits your physical frame and your coloring before making a choice. Delicate jewelry tends to suit petite women and vice versa. Furthermore, we all suit different colors so there is no point choosing something that clashes with your hair or makes you look pale and washed out.

It also makes sense to choose a gemstone necklace that matches the clothing and jewelry you already own. If most of the clothes in your wardrobe are orange, red and pown it would obviously be better to choose an amber necklace than one that contains turquoise. Similarly if you already own a gemstone pacelet that includes smoky quartz it would be prudent to purchase a necklace that has the same gem.

Use Your Heart

While it is important to consider the price and use common sense when deciding on a gemstone necklace the most important consideration is your own personal preference. Fine jewelry is not generally cheap. Buying a necklace you don’t really like because it seems like a good idea at the time is therefore wasteful, especially if it is a particularly expensive piece. If you purchase a gemstone necklace you should do so because you adore it and you know it is something you will wear often.
